UMMAT is voluntary based, non commercial, non political and non government organization. It was formally established in 1989 to serve the community. Ummat mainly works in the field of formal education and special workshops. The workshops are on topics such as social awareness, philosophy, history, religions and modern schools of thoughts.
Today, UMMAT has almost 100 male and female staff. 50 of them are highly educated volunteers running different programs of UMMAT and every year around 500 students are benefiting from our programs.
Our community resources and security are entirely based on the local markets and services available in Quetta city. Therefore the community is prone to higher vulnerability and has been experiencing very critical moments and hard times to cope with several types of problems.
In early 1980s some likeminded volunteers from our community in Quetta informally started working together to provide urgent support to poor and the most vulnerable families. Support such as food, fuel and medical supplies and they also started running social awareness and literacy classes. The patience and commitment to serve the community pursued them to strategize their struggle that resulted in establishment of UMMAT as an organization.
UMMAT’s perspective to root cause of social issues:
UMMAT considers ignorance as a root cause to all backwardness and most of the problems in the society. UMMAT perspective to ignorance with its broader meaning is as follows:
- Deficiency in understanding of a person from his/her rights and responsibilities as human
- Unawareness of his/her role, responsibilities and status in the society as a human or as a good citizen
Therefore alleviation and removal of the ignorance have been set as the first priority and have got a central role in our programs. We consider that the best audience to focus to encounter the ignorance is the young members of any society.
